Landscape and Memory started as a series of transcriptions of environmental sonic memories into sound, using a small modular synthesizer. Field recordings exist from most of the experiences, some of them more than a decade old at the time of writing. However at the start of the project I decided not to listen to them in order to retain the inaccuracies and the coloration of my own analog memory, since the purpose was not one to one imitation.

In the process of making the record some things became apparent to me:
The time spent working on the project drastically affected the way I was hearing the sonic landscapes around me. Associations to many aspects of synthetic sounds and others located in my memory became vividly related to what was being heard in various ways. The effect was quite striking considering the relatively short time period of some months.

Another thing happened while constructing some of the patches. Unintended sonic memories were being evoked by the sounds of the patch, which caused the intention of the piece to be blurred. This is likely due to the sonic memories being spilled and splashed into each, with new and old metaphors swarming on top of my intentions.

Since the sounds being worked on also seemed to affect the memories being accessed, one could think that the transcription of the sonic memories is a noisy 2-way process.
